At 11pm, I woke with my bladder protesting and I was…WARM! Woohoo! Reluctantly, I dragged myself out of the tent and staggered to the drop dunny. Glad to have not run into any wildlife, I cocooned back in and managed to make it almost a full night sleep.
In the morning, my body was stiff, but not painfully sore like the previous day. I gratefully packed my kit and we headed out to chase the lighthouse. Within a kilometre, we had to cross icy waters. Holy shit! I’m awake now! I did not bother putting my Big W joggers back on until we were about to leave the beach.
This was the fourth day out on the Cape to Cape Track. The day was spent twisting, turning, ascending and descending on dunes, 4WD tracks and trails. Each time we popped out of the shrubs, the tiny sliver of white on the horizon became larger and larger. Even at the registration station, complete with Snickers bar, we still had kilometres to go.
Eventually, we were spat out onto the rocky and rugged southwest corner of WA. The lighthouse was so close we could see the subtleties of the stone walls. With each step, my smile grew larger and the trials of the last three days melted away. We had made it 66km! It was time for victory selfies and a drink!
